If someone is stuck on a stopped lift now: if possible use the lift's emergency lowering function or alarm if fitted, and call the number on the lift's rating plate or control panel — the original installer or maintainer is the fastest route. If there is any safety risk, call 999.

Faults we arrange repairs for

Lift not responding or not powering on

  • Lift stopping mid-travel or between levels

  • Doors, interlocks, or safety barriers not releasing

  • Battery backup faults and lifts that only run on mains

  • Error codes and control fault lights

  • Slow, juddering, or noisy travel

  • Platform fold mechanisms jammed (inclined platform lifts)

  • Water ingress and weather damage on outdoor lifts

  • Dumbwaiter call stations, gates, and travel faults

A word of reassurance: a lift refusing to move is often doing its job. Platform lifts are designed to immobilise when an interlock, sensor, or battery condition is out of tolerance. Many "breakdowns" are a safety circuit doing exactly what BS EN 81-40/81-41 requires — and a competent engineer can usually diagnose which circuit quickly.

Repaired by the right engineer, not just any engineer

Platform lifts are specialist equipment. A general lift engineer used to conventional passenger lifts will not always know a screw-and-nut homelift drive or an inclined platform lift's rail system. When you contact us we identify the lift type — and, where you know it, the make and model — and match you with an engineer from our vetted network who actually works on that equipment. If your lift is still under the installer's warranty, we will tell you to go back to them first; a warranty repair should not cost you anything.

Repair or replace?

An honest repair assessment sometimes concludes the lift is not worth fixing — typically when it is beyond its design life, parts are obsolete, or repair costs approach replacement cost. Because we do not sell lifts or repairs, we have no stake in which answer you get. If replacement is genuinely the economic answer, you will be told why, with figures, and matched with installers for replacement quotes — starting from £6,389 for a new step lift.

Preventing the next breakdown

Most platform lift failures trace back to missed servicing. Every lift type has a recommended service schedule, and commercial lifts carrying people legally require six-monthly LOLER thorough examinations. If your lift is back up and running, the cheapest repair is the one you never need — see our servicing pages: homelift servicing, cabin lift servicing, step lift servicing, incline platform lift servicing, and dumbwaiter servicing.

Step lift costs in the UK vary depending on the height of travel, the type of lift, whether the installation is indoor or outdoor, and the specific manufacturer and model. As a general guide:
A basic open step lift for a single domestic entrance step typically starts from around £6389 to £11,000 installed. For two or three steps the cost rises to around £9,000 to £15,000 depending on the height of travel and model specified.
Enclosed step lifts and commercial-grade installations typically cost from £9,000 to £14,000 or above depending on the specification and complexity of the installation.
VAT relief is available on step lifts purchased for the personal use of a person with a disability or chronic illness — covering both the product and the installation. The Disabled Facilities Grant is also available through local councils and can fund step lift installations for eligible applicants up to £30,000 in England.

How to get help

Tell us the lift type, the fault, whether anyone is currently unable to access part of the property, and your postcode area. We will match you with a vetted engineer covering your area as quickly as we can. The matching service is free; you pay only the engineer for the repair itself, on a quote you approve.
